The other day, I found a roll of film in my backpack and... it turned out to be yet more pictures from out Light of Life trip. I thought I had more pictures somewhere! There were some especially good ones on the roll (figures - the director took the pictures), so I didn't want them to go to waste. Rather than toss them in with the huge stash of trip pictures in the previous special, I decided to put them here - on a more pocket-sized page. Enjoy!
Jess and Andy packing stuff into the back of the van. We carried a load of stuff, but considering that we were basically carrying everything needed to shoot a movie in the middle of the desert, I think we traveled pretty light.
Outside the hostel, getting ready to drive down into the crater. With the back of the van popped up, we could crank up the volume of the music and get the packing lot bouncing - as best as two tiny, old speakers could.
Bleak, bleak, and more bleak. But desert is pretty, in its own way.
Of course, nobody thought about what we were going to do for shoes until we got there. So we improvised and tore up a custom and several head-cloths to make foot-wraps. Matt and the extras reported that foot-wraps held out the heat and painful rocks perfectly well - until they stood up.
Matt with the main scroll (not the stunt scroll) putting on his blindfold.
The mud process. There are a lot of pictures of us gathered around the mud-hole dirtying up, which makes sense. Dressing in weird clothes and rubbing down with mud is something you don't usually get to do after you turn five.
No explanation needed.
Andy and Judge Matt. He actually didn't just put the scroll on his head because it looked funny; it made a good sunshade. Matt got thoroughly roasted on the back of his neck because he couldn't wear wraps during shooting. He put on sunscreen, but with all of the water (fake sweat) being dumped on him, it didn't last. We tried to keep him caked in mud, but that didn't last long either. |

Ooooh, Jess the temptress! This was taken after the very lengthy hair/makeup/dressing process.
Matt changing back into his normal clothes. Luckily he wore the shorts under his costume. Speaking of which - those abominable, bright-blue shorts kept getting into shots, especially in the climbing scenes. I guess it was better than the alternative.
While we were finishing our last temptress shots, a guy drove up, actually more like coasted up, and told us a sad story. He had just bought his van in Mitzpe Ramon and had just started on his way to Eilat (about 200 miles away) when it broke down. So we gave him some of our pita, humus and water and let him borrow a cell phone to call a tow-truck. He wasn't there the next day, so we assume that he made it to Eilat.
After the finish of the temptress shoot, matt found a piece of wood attached to an old electric wire. For the next five minutes, it was Matt's pet dog - Sparky.
And here is another, better version of the director-actor photo. Notice the stare of intense concentration on those faces, lit by the after-sunset glow - the time of day when it was far too dark to actually use the video camera... I'm sure that Spielberg poses for his pictures too sometimes. |
